As my students and I reflect on the influence and importance that space plays in learning, two ideas strike me hard. One is the idea of sending our children to school to learn about the world while confining them within four walls. The second has to do with children as main users of the school building particularly classrooms, and the kind of learning and social experiences they build as they interact in and with space. Classroom re-design for social-emotional learning is a 4th and 5th grade project that looks into the classroom through students' lenses using three filters, Interaction, aesthetics, and learning. Our goal is to build a "classroom" or flexible space, adaptable to students' psycho-evolutionary stages while promoting diversity, autonomy and understanding of individuals within groups.
