In this Project -Based Learning unit, students participate in the design process to create digital storybooks in Spanish. The idea behind this project is to use the foreign language as a vehicle to learn and connect different disciplines such as literature, art, technology, and engineering design to create a final product. This project is based on the book "El monstruo de Colores" by Ana Llenas and it serves as a guideline for students in the creation of their own versions of the story. This story also supports emotional intelligence with its focus on emotions.
The digital story project has different phases. We move from text analysis to paper and pencil designs to 3d puppet prototypes, then ebook design using tablets, puppetry performances, and publication of digital storytelling books. Rather than merely learning isolated vocabulary in Spanish, students are engaged in a project that allows them to learn and use the language in a meaningful way, participate in the STEAM curriculum and create content and technology rather than being only consumers. With this project, students create media that allow them to connect the work they do in different disciplines to their digital creations. This project can also be adapted to other subject areas such as social studies or English language arts.
